Gravestone. Dated 1746. For Thomas Chippendale. Gritstone. An upright
slab approximately 80 centimetres high with finely-tooled egg and dart
moulding to the edges and triangular pediment which has a winged head to the
apex. The lettering is finely cut but weathered: "Near this Place Lies in -
/ terr'd the Body of Tho / Chippendale of Ripley / (who) died Sept 2(?5)
1746 / In the 6(?3) year of his Age". The Chippendale family lived in
Ripley for many years, a Thomas Chippendale was a craftsman on the estate in
1735-6 and his father was an estate joiner. In 1752 William Chippendale
made a detailed survey of Ripley village. This family is thought, to have
been linked with Thomas Chippendale the cabinet maker (1718-79). It is on
the opposite side of the path from those of Ralph Sauby and Ralph Robinson
(qv). Ripley Castle Guide Book, p 8.
