of 4 cottages west of
Hotel de Ville)
GV II
Terrace of 4 cottages. Early-mid C19. Part of the estate village of Sir
William Amcotts Ingilby. Coursed squared gritstone, grey slate roof. 2
storeys, 4 bays; the 3 left bays having identical facades and bay 4 being a
mirrored facade. Gothick style. 2-steps up to 2-panel door with applied Y-
tracery in 4-centred arched surround with a square hoodmould which continues
to side, over a chamfered flat-headed mullion window of three 4-centred
arched lights. The 3 left-hand cottages have the window to right of the
door. First-floor band. Similar windows to first floor; all have small
rectangular leaded panes. Deep eaves cornice. Hipped roof and 3 ridge
stacks with paired octagonal corniced flues, to centre, left and right.
Right return: 2-light window to first floor, as front; eaves band. Sir
William rebuilt Ripley village in the same style as his father Sir John's
work on the Castle. The fenestration copies that of the tower, and the
Church View and Garden Cottage pair (qv) is similar in design.
