Group of 3 graves of Mary Lane, Sidney Leveson Lane and Viscount Downe
to east of church. Mid C19 and early C20. Stone. 2 curbed graves with
headstones and 1 coped grave lid. Grave to left commemorating
Sidney Leveson Lane, died 1910, has headstone in form of round head
cross with fleurée cross in relief on east face. Central grave
commemorating Mary Isabel, wife of 7th Viscount Downe and afterwards the
wife of Sidney Leveson Lane, has headstone of round-headed cross with
fleurée cross in relief on east face. Grave lid to right commemorates
Henry, 7th Viscount Downe, date of death illegible, and has Latin cross
fleurée in relief. The crosses on the gravestones are similar to that on
the graveyard cross (qv) and to that over the church door (qv).
Baldersby St James was the last of a series of church groups built by
the 7th Viscount Downe 1847-57. He died before St James was completed
and his remains were transfered from Topcliffe church when the
churchyard was consecrated.
