Lych gate. 1856-58. By William Butterfield for Viscount Downe of
Baldersby Park. High Victorian style. Snecked stone with red brick
bands to side walls, and stone buttresses. Wooden gates. Timber-framed
archways and roof structure. Tile roof. Square on plan, timber posts
on stylobates divide gateway into a wide and a narrow opening between
the stone flanking walls, with a double and a single gate.
Approximately 4 metres wide in all. Gates are of vertical bars,
1.2 metres tall, alternating with shorter bars. Top edges finished off
with hollow chamfers and blunt ends. Horizontal bars on inner surface,
original iron strap and clasp hinges and handles, also iron spikes in
fleur-de-lis design.
