House. Mid C18, remodelled 1818; reroofed and some alteration later.
Coursed sandstone rubble, whitewashed, with pantile roof and brick stacks.
2-storey, 4-window front. C19 board door beneath timber lintel at right of
centre. 3-light, 18-pane horizontal-sliding sash to right, and small 4-pane
fixed-light fire window at right end. 4-pane sash to left of door, and a
3-light, 12-pane horizontal-sliding sash at far left. On first floor two
2-light, 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes to left, 4-pane sash to centre
and small 4-pane sash right of the door. Coped gable to right. Right end,
left-of-centre and centre left stacks. Rear: battened plank door and 4-pane
fixed light beneath continuous timber lintel to left; small 4-pane sash with
painted timber lintel above. Datestone over door with oval centre panel
inscribed: "IW" 1818 for John Wood who married Ann Foxton in that year.
Of 2 stable doors at right end one remains, the other has been replaced by a
C20 board door in original surround, both with painted timber lintels.
Right return: blocked lifting door with roughly-tooled sill and lintel in
gable end. Nutholme was the birthplace in 1760 of William Scoresby, a
famous Whitby whaling captain; his son achieved fame as an Arctic explorer
on his father's whalers, and as a scientist, clergyman and social reformer.
