Tolbooth, now public hall. Mid C18; partly rebuilt after a fire in 1872.
Hammer-dressed sandstone; ashlar dressings; slate roof; brick stacks.
2 storeys, basement and attic; 3-bay front, arranged 1:3:1. Giant
rusticated pilasters to centre bay and angles. Central panelled double
doors with fanlight recessed into segmental-headed arch with flat surround.
Eight 12-pane windows to ground floor. Tall 12-pane sashes to first floor.
Ground floor windows have flat surrounds on which traces of the navies of
former guilds are visible. The upper windows have wedge lintels of vertical
sets. Raised bands to first and attic floors. Square turret at centre of
roof ridge, with a pagoda top and oval louvres on each side. End stacks.
In left gable wall is a panelled double door with an oriel staircase window
above. To left of door is a blocked window with flat lintel of vertical
sets.
