Kennels. 1858. For Birdsall Estate. Rendered brick, Welsh slate, brick
dog pens with iron railings. Symmetrical composition of central block with
side wings, all with dog pens in front, and flanking staff houses. Central
gabled section of 2 storeys, one bay. Rusticated quoins and render to
ground floor. Wide keyed elliptical arch. First-floor band. 16-pane fixed
window flanked by bas-reliefs of medieval kings' heads. Clock. Gable
coping, shaped kneeler. Rusticated bell-turret with moulded cornice
surmounted by wrought-iron weathervane with fox. Flanking wings of 3
sections, each with rusticated door-frame holding iron gate, and 16-pane
sash in keyed surround, and a dog pen. Staff houses each of 2-storeys, 4-
bays, central 2 breaking forward beneath gable. Rusticated quoins to angle.
Rustication to ground floor. First-floor band. 16-pane sashes in moulded
stone architraves throughout, with small fixed windows to outer bays of
ground floor. Door in rusticated architrave to return of central section
of each cottage. Gable coping, shaped kneelers, end stacks. These kennels
were specially designed to enable the gentry to view the hounds at close
quarters.
