Stable block and coach houses to Birdsall House (qv). Late C18 - early C19.
Herringbone-tooled ashlar, Welsh slate roof. Spinal range with 4 cross
wings to front, forming 3 yards, and 1 to rear. First yard: spinal range of
2 storeys, 7 first-floor windows. Central apsidal bay contains round-arched
sash and is flanked by round-arched sashes with 6-panel doors beneath
fanlights to outer bays. Hood-moulds to windows and doors form continuous
band. First floor: elliptical-arched 6-pane sashes. Cross wings each have
6-panel door with fanlight and round-arched sashes with hood-moulds forming
continuous bands. Elliptical-arched carriage entrances to gable ends.
Hipped roofs. Second yard at lower level. Spinal range: 3 storeys, 6 bays.
6 elliptical-arched carriage entrances. First-floor band. First and second
floors: slatted openings with 4 fixed panes above. Left cross wing:
2 round-arched stable doors, and 2 elliptical-arched carriage entrances now
partially blocked, with band above. Lean-to roof. Right cross wing:
3 storeys, 3 bays. 3 elliptical-arched carriage entrances and arch through
to stable yard. First and second floor bays, now faced with corrugated iron
sheets containing fixed windows, are divided by flat pilasters. Hipped
roof. Third yard: spinal range of single-storey 2-bay stables to left and 2
storey, 4-bay stables and tack room with flat above to right. To left:
board door beneath divided overlight, with sash with glazing bar to left.
To right: board door beneath divided overlight with 2 sashes with glazing
bars to left. First floor: sashes with glazing bars. Stone lintels
throughout. Left cross wing: lean-to coach house with 3 flat-headed double
doors. Right cross wing forms separate single-storey range with
2 elliptical-arched carriage entrances. Hipped roof. Interior: stables
contain original loose boxes and stalls. Pevsner N, Yorkshire, The East
