Broom House Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse, early-mid C18. Finely-coursed herring-bone-tooled sandstone with
chamfered alternating block quoins. Pantiled roof with stone ridge, copings and
kneelers, brick stacks. Main house 2 storeys, 3 bays with right extension of 2
storeys,l wide bay; facing south. Central original 4-panel door with overlight
in alternating - block surround with tall keystone, rising to first floor band;
extended voussoirs flank keystone. Windows in raised surrounds with ears, feet
and tall keystones: C20 casements on ground floor (probably originally
tripartite sashes) and 12-pane sashes on first floor, but without keys. block
kneelers; rebuilt end chimneys. Extension has 2 modern casements on ground
floor (one in blocked doorway) and 1 above. Right end brick chimney. Small
setback 1-storey right extension with boarded door. Small boarded attic
openings in right return whose gable end is quoined beneath the copings. Rear
elevation to road is rendered, with windows mostly replaced except for 12-pane
early C19 stair window. Interior: In left-hand room C20 fireplace is flanked by
original cupboards with panelled bases and gothic glazed upper doors framed in
pilasters and archivolt with scrolled key. Overmantel panel with ears and feet.
Right-hand room has salt and spice cupboards flanking a modern fireplace. Beams
in both rooms have quarter-round moulding. Staircase has turned balusters and
ramped handrail and there is a panelled landing screen. Doors throughout are
original, of 4 fielded panels.
