Description

NZ 60 NE DANBY DANBY DALE
East side

6/22 Wall, gate piers,
gates and stable
to north of Church
of St. Hilda
GV II

Churchyard wall with gates and piers near east end, stable attached
at west end. Late C18 and early C20. Coursed herringbone-tooled
sandstone; wood gate. Stable roof pantiled with stone copings and
kneelers. Wall about 4 feet high with thick flat coping slabs.
Pair of plain gate piers with ball finials hold panelled oak gates
whose top rail is carved with an inscription in memory of George
and Margaret Macmillan. An opening near west end has jambs carrying
similar ball finials. One-storey, 2-bay stable has Dutch doors on
north and south; inserted boarded door and small left window in
East end. High pitched roof with pointed kneelers under slab
copings.

The church is fairly central in the parish, but not near any large
settlement, so worshippers needed somewhere to shelter their horses
during divine service.
