Stables now offices. c1752. Probably by Matthew Ward. Ashlar and coursed
squared stone with graduated stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 13 bays, central
3 bays break forward. All ground-floor bays are semicircular-headed with
lunette windows, moulded architraves and impost bands; nearly all have been
infilled at a later date. Bays 2, 4, 9 and 11 have 6-panel doors with
moulded architraves. Central 3 bays are rusticated up to impost band with
rusticated voussoirs to arches. Central bay blind, those to either side
have Diocletian windows on top of tripartite sash windows. First floor:
rubblestone with quoins; 6-pane sashes with moulded architrave. Shaped
kneelers, roof hipped. Central square stone clock turret with plinth and
segmental cornice supports an octagonal arched wooden cupola with keystones
and plain columns set on 2-stepped plinth; cornice, hipped lead roof, ball
finial and weather vane.
