Description

WEYMOUTH

SY6684 STOTTINGWAY STREET, Upwey
873-1/6/613 (South side)
14/06/74 Summerhouse in north-east corner of
garden of No.25 Upwey Manor
(Formerly Listed as:
STOTTINGWAY STREET, Upwey
Summerhouse in north-east corner of
the Manor House garden)

GV II

Garden pavilion or gazebo. Early C19. Rubble, flint, felt
roof. A small hexagonal building with pyramidal roof set tight
into the corner of the boundary walls to N and E of Upwey
Manor (qv). The C20 plank door faces W, in moulded jambs to a
basket-arch head. To the right, in a small parabolic arch is a
2-light casement in broad framing and a central mullion. All
set to an offset plinth. The eaves are at approx 2.5m.
INTERIOR: not inspected, but said to have a geometric mosaic
floor made from horses' eye teeth. Much of the stonework is
tufa-like in texture, and the whole building is in the best
Romantic grotto tradition; the roof was presumably thatched
initially.
