Commercial premises. Late C18-early C19 with fragment of
probably C16 cruck-framed core. Coursed sandstone, stone slate
roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 5-window range disposed 1:3:1; the right
end bay encloses the cruck truss and is structurally part of
adjacent Queen's Arms Hotel (qv).
Bay 1; projects slightly and has segmental carriage arch with
keystone now infilled with paired 2/2 sashes. Central 3-bays:
large quoins on left; 2 segmental carriage arches with ashlar
quoins, voussoirs and central pier, both now infilled by
plinth walls to casements with glazing bars which form shop
windows. Boarded door in ashlar surround to left; 6/6 sash to
right. Bay 5; ashlar doorway to right of 6/6 sash. First
floor: projecting stone sills and ashlar surrounds to 6/6 and
8/8 sashes. Stone stack at step in ridge line between bays 4
and 5.
INTERIOR: right end wall incorporates cruck-truss with full
blades and front wall post rising to former floor beam with
joist holes; tie beam and collar beneath apex, diagonally-set
ridge; downbrace to front purlin set lower than present roof
line. Transverse ground floor beam approximately 2m from truss
has been raised.
