6.2.68 (formerly listed as
Low Hall)
GV II*
Farmhouse and stables, now private house. Mid C16 with late C16 additions and
mid C17 alterations, for the Crackenthorpe family. Mixed limestone rubble walls
with flush quoins. Graduated greenslate roof with C20 red sandstone coping;
large rubble chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 4 bays with rear right-angled 2-storey,
5-bay stable range, partly domestic, forming overall T-shape. The present
facade was originally the rear and the off-centre C17 2-bay gabled stone porch
was formerly the dairy, its roof now reduced in height. Porch doorway is
probably C20 but appears older. Returns have 2-light stone-mullioned windows.
Facade has ground-floor 2- and 3-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows, the
right with transoms, and small chamfered-surround windows. Upper-floor 3-light
mullioned-and-transomed windows and small chamfered-surround windows. Rear 2-,
3- and 4-light stone-mullioned windows and 2 mullioned-and-transomed windows
between which is a defaced coat-of-arms. Owner considers that the rear stable
range is the oldest part. Left pointed-arched doorway and 2- and 3-light
stone-mullioned windows. Further right flat-headed doorways and loft doorways.
The rear has a stair projection which covers part of one of the stone-mullioned
windows in rear of main hall. 2- and 3-light stone-mullioned windows, nearly
all of which have been blocked. Interior of main hall has large C16
segmental-arched stone fireplace. Blocked spiral stone staircase. End room has
elaborate late C16 patterned plasterwork ceiling in poor state of preservation.
C17 oak-panelled walls. Simpler patterned plaster frieze in bedroom above.
Domestic part of stable has added semicircular staircase. See RCHM,
Westmorland, 1936, p.222, plates 17, 48 and 50. Lower extensions at either side
of hall and lower extension to stable range, are not of interest.
