G.V. II*
House, dated 1694 and enlarged mid C18. Coursed squared rubble with quoins.
Remains of C17 structure in east wall (quoins, plinth, and window surrounds)
show it was half present depth. Graduated slate roof has stepped and corniced
stone end chimneys; moulded wooden eaves. Front elevation 3 storeys, 3 bays
(symmetrical); wet-dashed. Central part-glazed door has traceried segmental
head in doorcase with Tuscan pilasters and dated coat of arms above. Single
sash to each floor above door, tripartite sash to each floor at either end.
Rear elevation of 4 bays has tripartite sash to left and single sash to right on
each floor; steps up to part-glazed door with large sash stair window above;
full height transomed window with stone surround to servants' stair. All
windows have glazing bars. Internally the panelled doors, dado rails (some with
Vitruvian scrolls), closed string servants' stair and cut string main stair
(with its turned balusters, fluted rectangular newels and ramped handrail)
survive. Of the C18 coriniced fireplaces remaining, that in the 1st floor front
(east) room has bayleaf and rosette decoration; in the same room is a glazed
corner cupboard with internal wooden ribbed semidome and shaped shelves. The
area railings stand on a low wall in front of the house. A wrought-iron
scrollwork panel separates groups of standards to either side of the large
central double gate which has on ornate overthrow, openwork spearhead standards
and scrollwork decoration. Probably mid C19.
