Description

GWINEAR-GWITHIAN
SW 53 NE
4/9 Taskus Farmhouse, front garden
walls, gate-piers and mounting
- block

GV II
Farmhouse, front garden walls, gate-piers and mounting block. Circa late C17,
mostly rebuilt circa early C19 (datestone 1822 on farm building to north east).
Coursed faced granite with granite dressings. Hipped asbestos slate roof with brick
chimneys over side walls and over cross wall and gable end of rear wing. Scantle
slate roof over lean-to.
Plan: Overall L-shaped plan: 2 reception rooms at the front flanking an
approximately central entrance hall leading to a stair hall; behind the left hand
room an integral kitchen wing at right angles plus a later C19 1-room-plan back
kitchen extension behind and behind the right-hand room is an integral lean-to -
former pantry with stone steps leading from this into a cellar under the right-hand
reception room.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window south-east front over ashlar
plinth. C20 door and C20 16-pane horned sashes in original openings.
Interior: repaired in the C20 following a period of neglect but retaining most of
the C19 carpentry and joinery. The granite fireplace in the kitchen is probably C18
and has a panelled overmantle. The C17 or C18 cellar ceiling structure is oak and
the joists are jointed into an axial beam which is scarfed over a central granite
post.
Low coped granite ashlar garden walls at front and right-hand side of the front
garden with wide gateway aligned with the doorway of the house. The piers are tall
square-on-plan granite monoliths surmounted by pyramidal caps. Adjoining a wall
returning in front left of the gateway is a granite rubble mounting block.
There is some reused C17 and earlier dressed granite masonry incorporated into the
farm buildings (not included in the listing).
