Description

TREVALGA
SX 08 NE
4/228 Treforda
II
Farmhouse. Circa mid to late C16, possibly with earlier origins, extended in circa
early C17 and in mid to late C19. Slate stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends,
with higher slate roof with gable ends over inner room on left and gable end to 2-
storey porch on front. Stone rubble axial hall stack backs onto higher side of
passage on left, stone rubble axial stack, originally gable end stack to right and
brick stack on right hand gable end. Stack on left hand gable end of inner room
removed possibly when the range was extended to the left.
Plan: Overall 3-room and through passage plan with 2-storey porch; 1-room extension
on lower right hand side. The original house possibly comprised a plan of 2 rooms or
more with a through passage; the single storey open hall on left and probably 2-
storey lower end on right. The hall on left is still only of a single storey and was
open to the roof until the early 1980s. However the inserted ceiling prevents access
to the roof structure and it is therefore uncertain whether there is evidence of
smoke blackening to indicate an earlier open hearth. The rear wall of the hall is
lit by the original 2-light hall window and a shallow projection of uncertain purpose
adjoining; it may have been a rear lateral stack, the fireplace now removed but this
is unlikely because of the axial fireplace at the lower end of the hall. On the
front wall of the hall is a single storey hall bay projection. On the lower right
hand side of the passage, the lower room is heated by what was originally a gable end
stack prior to the circa mid to late C19 extension beyond. In circa early to mid C17
a further room was added on the higher left hand gable end of the hall, the thick
wall between the hall and inner room continuing up to the apex forming the gable end
of the higher 2-storey range on left. The inner room was heated by an internal stack
and the first floor chamber is approached by a stone stair on the right hand side of
the fireplace; the upper stage of which has been replaced with open timber treads.
Probably in circa C17 a 2-storey porch was added to the front of the through passage
and probably in the C19 a stair was inserted to the rear of the passage. The site of
the original stair for the lower end is uncertain. In circa late C18 or early C19 a
lean-to outshot was inserted to the front of the hall between the hall bay projection
and the 2-storey porch. In circa mid to late C19 a further 2-storey extension of 1
room plan was added to the lower right hand end, heated by an end stack. In circa
C20 the hall was divided by a partition with a corridor running across the front of
the house.
Two 2-storey ranges flank the single storey hall range with a 2-storey porch near the
centre. Asymmetrical 5-window front. To left, the 2-storey inner room has been
extended with an outbuilding now used as a garage. Inner room has a blocked door
opening with C20 window inserted and a C19 6-pane window above. The single storey
hall range has a 3-light mullion window in a bay projection on left and a circa late
C18 or early C19 outshot with lean-to roof adjoining to right. The gabled 2-storey
porch has a chamfered granite surround to the entrance with a straight joint to the
left indicating part rebuilding. C19 6-pane window above. The lower end on right
has a 3-light mullion window on the ground floor and a C19 2-light casement above.
The C19 extension on right has a plank door and wide window opening to right with C20
fenestration. Two 4-pane sashes on first floor.
Interior : Circa C19 framed stair to rear of through passage. Blocked rear opening
of passage visible from within outshot to rear. The hall bay projection was also lit
by a small 1-light window on the higher side, visible from interior. The rear hall
window has deeply splayed reveals on the interior. The inner room stair, to the
right of the fireplace which is now partly blocked, was originally lit by a small
blocked 1-light window which is visible on the interior. The partition on the lower
side of the passage has been remodelled. The lower end originally heated by a gable
end stack has a circa early C17 granite fireplace with chamfered lintel and jambs,
probably with pyramid stops. The fireplace has been partly remodelled in the C20.
The ceiling beams are roughly chamfered, the stops buried in the wall. C19 fireplace
in extension on right hand lower end.
Roof structure : 2 bay roof above inner room with circa C18 truss, halved, lapped,
crossed and pegged at apex and collar lapped and pegged onto face of principals.
Circa late C19 roof above porch, passage and lower room, the single truss above the
porch and 3 trusses above the passage and lower room bolted at the apices. An
earlier truss may survive as a closed truss in the partition above the lower side of
the passage. The roof structure above the hall was inaccesible at time of
inspection.
