7/182 Westcott Farmhouse on south side
- of settlement at Westcott
GV II
Farmhouse. Circa late C16. Rendered stone rubble and cob, partly rebuilt in brick
on left hand gable end. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Brick shaft to end stack on
left and brick shaft to axial stack, left of centre.
Plan: Probably originally of three room and cross or through passage plan with
higher end on right. Entrance to left of centre with service room on lower, left
hand side of passage and hall on higher, right hand side, heated by an axial stack,
backing onto the passage. Inner room on far right probably unheated. Stair turret
projection to rear of passage and lower side of hall; the stair rose from rear wall
of hall, close to the fireplace.
In circa C18 or early C19 an outshut extension was added to the rear of the passage
and lower end, incorporating the stair projection. Gable end wall of lower end
rebuilt in early C20. In the C19 or C20 the house was divided into two cottages with
a second entrance close to the partition between the hall and inner room and in the
later C20, the two cottages reverted back to a house, the original entrance being
blocked and the partition between the inner room and hall removed.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front with renewed C20 2-light
casements. Entrance to right of centre with C20 porch. Three casements to left of
entrance, the central casement in the original entrance and casement to right of
entrance. Three casements on first floor.
Interior: Hall fireplace with cavetto moulded granite lintel and jambs with pentan
to rear and remains of cloam oven. Slight chamfered floor joists to hall. Inner
room unheated and fireplace to lower end rebuilt when the end wall collapsed in circa
early C20. C19 stair in earlier stair turret.
Roof structure above hall and inner room replaced, probably in C19. Roof structure
above lower end not inspected.
