Description

WERRINGTON
SX 38 NW
9/273 Peppershill Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. Probably C17, possibly partly remodelled in early C18. Stone rubble,
painted on front elevation. Stone rubble and cob rear wing. Rag slate roof with
gable ends. Brick shafts to end and rear lateral stone rubble stacks; the right hand
end and rear lateral brick shafts constructed of probably C18 bricks.
Plan: The house is built down the slope with the ground rising to left. The front
range has a 3-room and cross or through passage plan, the entrance to left of centre
with the hall, which is heated by a rear lateral stack, below the existing entrance
with inner room beyond to right, heated by end stack. The lower end is above the
entrance to left and is also heated by an end stack. A lean-to outshut to rear of
the lower end and passage contains the stair and a circa later C17 rear wing to the
rear of the hall contains the service rooms with a dairy on the ground floor.
On the front elevation, the central part of the front wall is set forward; the stone
rubble masonry although painted, appears of fine quality with slate galetting and is
similar to that in the C17 barn and left hand gable end of Radford (qv) thus
suggesting an early date. Additionally, there is a moulded string course above the
ground floor on the left hand side which continues around the central projection,
truncated where the window arches were altered in the C19. It appears therefore that
this unusual projection is original or alternatively an early alteration.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 1:4 window front with the central part set
forward, the window and door openings with brick segmental arches are alterations of
the circa later C19. Entrance to left of centre with late C19 or early C20 plank
door flanked by late C19 16-pane sash to left and two similar sashes to right. Four
similar sashes on first floor. Set back to left, C19 sash on ground floor with
originally continuous moulded slate string above and C19 2-light casement on first
floor. Part glazed C20 porch set back on right.
Interior: Not accessible. An interior inspection may help further analysis of the
plan and development of this house.
