14/06/74 Yard wall to Devenish No.1 Malthouse
GV II
Boundary wall and gateways. Early to mid C19. Portland stone
squared and coursed or coursed rubble. The total run overall
is approx 32m.
The wall encloses a courtyard across the width of the
Malthouse (qv) in a run of approx 4.5m in large rough-squared
and coursed stone approx 2.7m high to a rough saddle-back
coping. At the right-hand end it is stopped to a dressed jamb,
with approx 3m wide opening to the right, containing a pair of
plank gates on timber posts. At the left, to a straight joint,
the wall continues in smaller coursed rubble, with similar
coping, sweeping back in a segmental quadrant to jambs in
large dressed block with half-pyramidal cappings to a former
opening, approx 3.5m wide, filled full height with concrete
blockwork. Beyond this opening the segmental sweep runs across
at a slight angle to abut the side wall of No.7 Hope Street
(qv), the warehouse connected by a footbridge to the
Malthouse.
The wall is of interest as an element associated with the
Malthouse, but also is important visually in relation to Hope
Square.
