Description

SW 62 NW SITHNEY

7/260 Sithney Trough (Sithney General
- Stores) and front courtyard wall

GV II

Small house with cottage (possibly originally a shippon) attached and wall with gate to the front. Circa early C19. Roughly coursed killas rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones and ground floor lintels, slate sills and some
wooden lintels. Asbestos slate roof with rendered chimneys over the gable ends.
Plan: 2 room house with central lobby and stair, and on the left a 1 room plan
cottage addition, probably originally a shippon (there is evidence for a former
loading doorway in the present first floor window position). C20 shop adjoins at the right, not included.
2 storeys. Overall 3 window front: original symmetrical 2 window front with central doorway and 1 window front cottage, left, with a doorway on its right. C20 ledged doors and old 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes, those to the house probably original. There is a painted advertisement mural on the left hand
gable end.
Interior not inspected.
The wall at the front is rubble and earth, enclosing a shallow rectangular area in
front of the house. In front of the house doorway is a gateway swept in from the
road to roughly-hewn granite monolithic piers and with a circa early C19 wrought iron
gate with arrowhead finials over the bars which are closer set to the bottom of the
gate.
One of very few unspoiled small houses fronting onto a main road in this part of
Cornwall.
