Description

SW 62 NW SITHNEY

7/258 Pednavounder Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. C18, extended circa early C19. Killas and granite rubble with dressed
granite quoins and lintels. Steep asbestos slate roof sweeping lower to rear with
brick chimneys over the gable ends; grouted scantle slate roof with hipped ends over
the adjoining dairy and outbuilding.
Plan : double-depth plan with 2 front rooms flanking a cross passage leading to a
central stair hall and a shallow rear service room at either side. In the C18
extended with a 2 storey dairy with shippon range at the left hand side. This single
depth range projects farther at the front than the house and has an outshut behind
the right hand side providing a rear-entrance porch to the house and a passage from
the dairy, right, and the rear left hand service room of the house. The original
rear door of the house (beside the stair) is blocked. The dairy is now the kitchen
of the house but the wider shippon, left, is still a farm building.
There is a storage loft over both dairy and shippon, that over the dairy now part of
the house. At the left hand end the shippon is built into the bank and there is a
lean-to earth closet at mid floor level at the end.
2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window south front with nearly central doorway.
Ledged door with integral panes. Similar windows to the dairy (now kitchen) left.
At the rear are some 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes.
Interior : little altered since the C19 and retaining some C18 features including
ovolo moulded beams and a dog leg stair. Probably the original roof structure (not
inspected).
An interesting C19 adaptation of a C18 farmhouse so that it was linked to a dairy
with shippon. A kind of longhouse derivative.
