House, formerly 2 cottages. Early and mid C19. Plastered cob on rubble footings;
brick stack topped with C19 and C20 brick; red interlocking tile roof (thatch until
1901).
Originally a pair of 2-room plan cottages facing east with a central axial stack in
the former party wall serving back-to-back fireplaces. The former cottage to right
(north) is older than the former left-hand cottage. Both have small outshots
against the end walls and there is a rear outshot behind the former left cottage.
The 2 cottages were united in C20. 2 storeys.
Overall 4-window front, each former cottage having a symmetrical 2-window front.
All the windows, except the early C20 replacement on ground floor right end, are mid
- late C19 2-light casements with 9 panes each. Left door is C19 and right door is
C20 behind contemporary gabled and tile-roofed porch. Roof is gable-ended and the
central chimney shaft has a straight join between the 2 building phases.
Interior shows plain carpentry detail where exposed. The timber of heaviest
scantling is the plain soffit-chamfered crossbeam in the right heated room. The
roof is of A-frame trusses nailed together and the left roof is clearly later than
the right room.
Crossways Cottage, though relatively late in date, is nevertheless an attractive
cottage dominating the crossroads at the northern end of the village and also
unusual in retaining its C19 fenestration.
