Cottage. First-mentioned in parish records in 1675 according to the owners and the
features are consistent with such a date. Interior rearranged circa 1960 and
modernised again circa 1981. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; original stack
is cob topped with C19 and C20 brick, secondary brick stack topped with C20 brick;
thatch roof and slate to outshots.
2-room plan cottage facing south. The left (western) room has the original end
stack. The right room has a secondary end stack (probably C20) and was subdivided
circa 1960 to provide an entrance hall and staircase. At the same time part of the
rear outshots were brought into domestic use as the kitchen. The rest of the
outshots now belong to Sunnybank Cottage (q.v.) which adjoins on the rear left
corner. Main house is 2 storeys.
Irregular front has 2 ground floor and 4 first floor windows. All are C19 casements
with glazing bars and old glass except the C20 French window ground floor right
behind contemporary conservatory with corrugated plastic roof. The first floor
windows have thatch eyebrows over. Roof is gable-ended to left and half-hipped to
right. The main door is C20 and now situated in the right end wall.
Interior: the basic structure is original. Both rooms have soffit-chamfered and
scroll-stopped crossbeams. The main (left) room fireplace is built of brick and the
lintel is also soffit-chamfered with scroll stops. The 4-bay roof is carried on a
series of A-frame trusses. Although the roofspace is inaccessible the large
scantling of the exposed lower parts of the trusses and their well-squared corners
indicates that they are original.
