Description

SY 09 SE NEWTON POPPLEFORD VENN OTTERY
AND HARPFORD
4/95 Forecourt walls including gates
- adjoining to east and
approximately 25 metres north of
Venn Ottery Barton
GV II

Forecourt walls and gates. Late C17-early C18 with some C19 and C20 repatching.
Gates are probably circa 1810. English bond brick walls with cast iron gates.
Relatively tall walls enclosing large forecourt on its north, south and eastern
sides. The south-east corner includes a contemporary pavilion (now part of Garden
Cottage (q.v.)) and the gateway is at the northern end of the east side. Here from
plain square piers projecting slighly from the main wall and concave quadrant walls
curve in to plain brick gate piers which contain double gates. The gates have
spear-headed rails, a double lock bar containing circles and the spaces between the
rails below filled with diagonal crosses.
The farmhouse (q.v.), a pavilion (q.v.) and forecourt walls form a group in a
picturesque setting. There are striking similarities here to the arrangement at
nearby Elliots Farm (q.v.).
