2.
Public house. c1900. Red brick, tile hanging, hipped tiled roof with decorative
cresting, gabled roof to carriage entrance extension, two lofty brick stacks; main
roof with modillion cornice interrupted by two wide bays, and terminated right with
large flat stone moulded 'Kneeler'. A lofty main block with projecting square wood
bays breaking through eaves line, and each crowned with semi-circular pediment
centrally to moulded cornice. To the left a wide carriage entry under flat lintol
with one storey over. The whole in a very rich Art Nouveau plus Arts and Crafts
tradition, generously detailed. Three storeys (two to carriage entrance) 1+2-windowed,
a 2-light sash, left, and 3-light sashes at first and second floors in the bays, all
with glazing bars plus Art Nouveau glass in upper sashes and plain glass below.
Ground floor all as originally designed with central feature with quadrant returns
to pair of doors, left, and single door, right, heavily moulded and detailed, over
dark green and light green polished faience tiles with excellent original motifs
including name of pub. Pair of original wood gates with iron cresting, carriage
entry. Above the fascia to main block, full width decorative iron railing standing
proud of bays and rich cast-iron decorative rainwater hoppers and drainpipes. An
altogether excellent survival of an early C20 pub frontage. Interior not viewed.
