Sundial, in Albert Park.

Sundial dated:1876 and 1879, by John Smith (Stockton), for H.W.F. Bolckow
(ironmaster). Sandstone ashlar; bronze gnomon. Gothic style. Sundial
inscribed on painted tablet, dated 1876, under segmental-pointed recess, in
pilaster-and-gable surround. Roundel in gable dated 1879. Deep plinth has
gabled angle buttresses and slate tablet inscribed: "Equation of Time for
Every 5th Day of the Month", followed by table. Sundial has 3 concentric
dials giving time in New York, Melbourne and the Park. Greek mottoes in
spandrels. Square border inscribed : "TIME BY MOMENTS STEALS AWAY FIRST THE
HOUR THEN THE DAY". Diagram of solar system above dials, with 12 signs of
zodiac in oval border. Below sundial, verse now partly eroded. Blank panel
in similar surround on reverse side. Dilapidated at time of resurvey.
