Piers and wing railings
GV II
Pair of carriage gates, 1894, by Douglas and Fordham for the 1st Duke
of Westminster, of wrought and cast iron hung from square openwork
iron piers carrying lanterns, originally gas lit. Side gates for
pedestrians flanked by quadrant wing railings on sandstone plinths.
Ornate "W", ducal coronet and Cheshire sheaf form central motifs of
carriage gates. Virtus non stemma, the Grosvenor motto, painted on
cast iron Garter on each main pier.
The gateway forms a group with Eccleston Lodge (q.v.) and the adjacent
Causeway (q.v.) both in Eaton Parish.
