7/41 Cow house and attached wall and
4.6.79 trough south of Castle
GV II
Cow house. Early C19. Slatestone rubble with granite and brick dressings, slate
roofs.
Rectangular plan, deeper than it is wide. The 3-bay front leads to a 2-bay interior,
of double width to left, and at a lower level to right; the wide bay can be entered
through a cart entry and has a narrow entrance to the rear. The right side was
originally open, divided by granite piers. The false wall to the front has
pigeonholes, and there is a loft over the cowhouse. The original function is not
clear, although the building is unusual in its architectural treatment and-does not
appear to have been altered.
The front wall is divided into 3 bays, with central elliptical cart entrance, narrow
round-arched entrance to each side; the heads of all the entrances are level although
the ground slopes down to the right to the lower level bay. Loading door above to
left and right, blind to right, all openings in granite surrounds with dressed
granite quoins and voussoirs. String course and parapet, with 3 rows of pigeonholes
in brick, parapet raised to form 2 shallow gables, each with pigeonhole at the apex.
The left side has 4 ventilation slits at ground floor level. Attached to left, a
single storey rubble lean-to with corrugated iron roof. Attached to left, rubble
wall about 1 metres high, swept round to enclose a semicircular area at a higher
level to the front left of the cowhouse. Slate water trough set in wall at outer end
of curve. The wall is continued to north for about 18 metres further. The right
side has a lean-to roof over over the narrow bay, at a lower level, 6 bays divided by
roughly hewn granite piers, with wooden doors. The rear gable end of the wide bay
has 2 doors and upper loading door.
Interior The 2 bays are divided by an arcade of 3 bays, with basket arches in brick
on rectangular granite piers. The stonework of the piers is interlaced with
slatestone, and the piers have impost mouldings.
