Stables. Circa 1740, with some later alterations. Slatestone rubble with brick and
stone dressings. Hipped slate roofs with ridge tiles and lead rolls to hips. Some
ranges have slurried scantle slate roofs. Stacks with brick shafts.
Plan: Overall H-plan, with a detached laundry block in the rear yard. To front,
there is the central range, with a cartway through the middle; wing to front left and
right, enclosed in the front by a wall with gateway at the centre. The rear yard has
wing to right and left, with a forge in the rear left wing. The laundry block is set
centrally in the rear yard.
Exterior: The front wall enclosing the yard is about 3 metres high with granite
coping, ramped down at each side to a pair of central square plan granite ashlar
piers on plinths with flat caps. The piers have pintles from former gates. The
front yard is cobbled and paved.
The central range has a gable over a round arch to cartway with keystone; cupola with
clock and bell, ogee roof with weathervane. To right and left, single storey range
with 2 mullion and transom windows and central plank door with overlight, all
openings with cambered brick arches with keystones. The range to front right has 2
carriage doors and a single door with overlight, 2 mullion and transom windows and a
plank door to right. To right is the estate workshop. The range to front left has 3
carriage doors, 2 plank doors and central mullion and transom window, with a
ventilator over the door to left. The cartway through the centre block has a 2-light
window to right.
At the rear, the central range has 2 blocked windows to right; the wing to left has 6
door openings of varied widths, small window with shutters to left end; stack with
brick shaft to right. The wing to right has 2 doors with central 12-pane light; this
is the forge, with a ventilator on the roof ridge above the furnance, 2 cart
entrances, 2-light casement, door and ventilator window to right. The detached
laundry is of single storey with loft, hipped roof with a stack with a brick shaft at
each side and an integral single storey outshut to the rear. The front facing the
yard has 2 windows with cambered brick arches with keystones, and a C20 addition to
front right. Left and right sides have plank door and 2-pane light. At the rear, to
each side of the laundry are a pair of square plan rubble piers, forming 2 gateways
to the rear yard, with flat granite caps and pintles from former gates. The rear of
the laundry has two 2-light windows in the outshut.
The rear of the wing to right has 3 blind doorways, set low; rear of the wing to left
has blocked door; all with cambered brick arches with keystones.
Interior: In the central range of the stables, the block to left of centre contains
loose-boxes, which have name-plates. Boxes have drains and mangers. Saddle racks on
the wall.
In the rear left range, the forge is complete, with furnace with hood, lead water
trough and work bench below the front window; C19 concertina bellows worked by a
wooden arm counterbalanced with weights.
This is a rare survival, in complete state, of a stables which combines use for
carriages, riding and driving horses, farm horses at the rear and estate workshops
including the forge. The laundry appears to be contemporary with the stables and
formerly contained boiling coppers. This is a good example of a stable which is
symmetrically planned, with the higher status uses at the front and farm uses behind.
