Church of St Manarck and St Dunstan

St Manarch: monument to Charles Grylls, 1623; four sons (John, Francis, Charles & George) & four daughters (Elizabeth, Mary, Agnes & unknown)

Uploader's Comments

Above the four sons are shields of Grylls impaling their respective wives. Above the daughters, the respective husbands impale Grylls. As the tragic poem suggests, one son and daughter died young. All the other daughters died childless in childbirth.

THE LAST DIED FIRST, THE FIRST AND ALL THE REST
WITH CHILDREN STORE, THE LIVING GOD HAS BLEST
WHO PRAISE HIS NAME THAT BLESSED HAD THEIR STORE
AND HOPE IN BLISS TO BLESS HIM EVERMORE.

ONE DIED A CHILD, THE REST ALL CHILDLESS DIED
AND YET WITH CHILD IN CHILDBIRTH, HEAVEN DENIED
BASE EARTH THEIR SOULS OR ISSUE SHOULD DETAIN
RARE THINGS ARE SHOWN BUT STRAIGHT SHUT UP AGAIN
