4/47 Dane Feeder Cottage
II
Cottage 1825 or earlier, altered, of squared coursed tooled sandstone
with grey clay-tile roof. The original portion, of red stone, has 2
storeys and 2 windows. A C19 2-storey 1-window extension to right is
of yellow stone. Gable chimney left and ridge chimney (at right end
of original portion) are of stone with projecting caps and
drip-stones. Small casements of 2 single-pane lights to original
portion; small-pane window to lower storey of extension, window of 2
single-pane lights with leaded glazing to upper storey. Boarded door
renewed late C20.
The cottage was built to house the employee of the Trent and Mersey
Canal Company who maintained the feeder-channel to Rudyard Lake (in
Staffordshire) which was formed in 1802 as a canal reservoir for the
Trent and Mersey canal system via the Leek Branch. In 1823 Thomas
Telford was commissioned to improve the Dane feeder.
