School, now house. c1718. Founded by William Wentworth of Woolley Hall (q.v.).
Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roofs. 2 storeys. 3 cells. All are shallow
double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals. 1st cell is
single storey with quoins to left, 2-light window and roof with hip to left.
2nd cell has quoins to left; 2-light window to each floor to left of doorway with
composite jambs and deep lintel with chamfered surround; shaped kneeler, coping
and stack to left gable. 3rd cell, taller, has quoins; doorway with quoined lintel
and chamfered surround to left of 6-light window with king-mullion with same above;
coped gables with shaped kneelers and stacks. Rear fairly featureless: doorways
to 1st and 2nd cells.
Interior: 2nd cell, the former master's house, has large stop-chamfered spine
beam. 3rd cell, the former school room, has stop-chamfered spine beam and joists
partly revealed.
The building served as village institute before its present function.
