Emporium, now shop. 1894. For England's furnishing and ironmongers' store. Biege
terracotta made by Leeds Fireclay Company, probably originally facing a cast-iron
framed building, now replaced by a late C20 building; Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys,
1:1:1:1 bays. Third bay forms shop entrance, with round-arched portal on ground
floor and projecting canted bay on floors above; flanked on ground floor by C20
plate-glass shop windows, above which are basket-arched first-floor windows, and
2-light second-floor windows. Above is a frieze, divided into panels by capitals
above divisions below treated as pilasters, and panels are cast with lettering
"ENGLAND" "COMPLETE" "HOUSE"' "FURNISHER", except over canted bay which has scrolled
foliage. Rich cornice with egg-and-dart motif. Panelled parapet with pierced
panels, ball and urn finials, and central dormer with Dutch gable. Terracotta coping
of segmental section. Narrow left-hand bay has arched through-passage entrance with
transomed window on each upper floor and cornice below cusped parapet.
