07/08/52 No.3
GV II
House. C18, with a C15 core. Timber-framed; fronted in red
brick; rendered gable at rear; tiled roof, slightly mansard.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, cellar and attics. 3 window range:
12-pane sashes throughout, but deeper on the ground storey,
all in plain reveals with very fine gauged brick arches. 2
flat headed dormers with 2-light single bar casement windows.
A 6-panel door and fanlight, with radial glazing-bars and an
architrave with panelled pilasters and a flat cornice hood, is
set within a semi- circular arched recess with the same fine
gauged brickwork as the windows. The 2-storey rear gabled wing
has a long C19 single-storey slate-roofed extension.
INTERIOR: high cellar with chamfered main ceiling beams and
walls with deep narrow alcoves. The front range, apparently
basically C17, now has only Georgian features: internal
panelled window shutters; stair with stick balusters and
wreathed handrail.
The rear range, linked to the front by an internal
chimney-stack, seems to have been joined to an earlier range
at the back of No.2 (qv): a much altered partition has the
remains of heavy studding and an original doorway with plain
4-centred arched head. A short section of ceiling-beam has a
wide chamfer and curved stops. This range has a crown-post
roof, the posts embedded in walling; braced collar purlin
exposed, rafters covered.
