Canal lock. c1798. For the Rochdale Canal Company. Large blocks of coursed
squared stone, the quoins and upper course with drafted margins. Some wood lining
of the base visible at resurvey. Upper (north-west) end has shelf, recess on either
side for lock gates (removed), and iron buffers attached to the top of the round-
cornered entrance walls. In each lock gate recess is a culvert entrance. At lower
end of lock are the recesses for lock gates (removed) and, slightly higher up,
another set of recesses for a second pair of gates. For information on canal
