5/208 Ivy House Farmhouse
II
House. Initialled and dated "S S 1676" (Samuel Sunderland of Hill End Farmhouse
(q.v.)). Large dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys. 2-cell gable-entry
plan, double-depth. Plinth. All are double-chamfered mullioned windows, those
to 1st floor have almost square reveals. 1st cell has 5-light window with 4-light
above lacking mullions. 2nd cell has 6-light window with king-mullion with 4-light
window above and 2-light fire-window with single arch-headed light above. Coped
gables with kneelers and ridge stacks. Rear has 4 windows to ground floor: 2 of
2 lights flanked by 3-light windows. 1st floor has two 3-light windows (one lacking
mullions). Right-hand return has gabled mid-C20 porch protecting original doorway
which has square head, composite jambs and stop-chamfered surround, the lintel
bearing date inscription in high relief.
Interior: housebody has large bressumer carried on chamfered heck-post with carved
decoration thought to be a charm against witchcraft, and sometimes therefore called
a witch-post. Heck-screen formed of board and muntin-panelling. large Crudely
dressed spine beams with broad chamfer.
