Bank. c1892 by E. I. Hubbard for the Sheffield and Rotherham Joint Stock
Banking Company (press cutting). Ashlar sandstone, polished Aberdeen granite
columns, Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys with attics. Corner site with curved
corner bay having 5 bays to right facing High Street and 6 bays to left
facing Wellgate. High Street facade: plinth with bases for giant Corinthian
columns between each bay. Doorway to bay 2 has ΒΌ colonnettes in the jambs;
panel above with raised lettering 'OLD BANK / FOUNDED 1792'; segmental pediment
with elements of Sheffield and Rotherham arms in tympanum. Bay 5 has doorway
with architrave and plain panel beneath consoled pediment, lst-floor band
beneath sash with bracketed, moulded sill and architrave. All other bays
recessed and with ground-floor casements having bracketed sills, architraves
and pediments; lst-floor band beneath windows as bay 5. Full entablature
parapet with dies at bay intervals. Corner bay and bays to Wellgate recessed
and in same style except left-hand bay which has pedimented doorway and paired
lst-floor window. Left return of Wellgate front has earlier coursed-stone
walling beneath white-glazed brickwork.
Interior: good original ceiling to banking hall. Manager's office retains
C18 bolection-moulded fireplace and overmantel. An earlier doorway formerly
existed on left return of Wellgate front.
