House and outbuilding. House early C17 with C18 alterations and added
outbuilding. Limestone rubble, graduated stone slate roof. 2-storey,
l-bay house and 1-bay outbuilding. House: part-glazed board door right
with chamfered jambs and triangular head to chamfered lintel, projecting
drip-stone above. 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window to left, 2-
light flat-faced mullion window above. Outbuilding: board door left,
small opening (possibly a mucking-out hole) right. Ridge stack left end.
Rear: random fenestration; large inserted 18-pane window to ground floor
centre, a smaller 12-pane window to right; 3 small chamfered lights to left
of centre and an enlarged 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window to
right. Similar window of 3 (mullions missing) and 3 lights to first-floor
of house. Interior not inspected at resurvey but reported to contain a
large fireplace. The house is a rare survival of a small C17 house,
possibly of only 1 storey and 1 bay with a half-bay storage area. The roof
was raised in the C18 when the byre was added or modified. The C20
extension at the left end includes masonry from the Old School House, a
former grade II listed building which stood approximately 10 metres south
of East Garth.
