Farmhouse. C17 and C18. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings,
graduated stone slate roof. Plan forms 3 sides of a rectangle, main front
early C18, rear wings early C17. Main front: 2 storeys with cellar, 4 bays.
Central 1/2-glazed door with stone architrave, pulvinated frieze and pediment;
above is a sundial. Right 2 bays have cellar openings with chamfered
surrounds. All windows on ground and first floor are 4-pane sashes with
plain stone surrounds and moulded sills. Moulded stone cornice, coped
parapet. Stone coping, end stack to right and brick ridge stack. To right
lower C17 wing: 2 windows, 1 with chamfered surround and that above with
moulded architrave. On right, gable with shaped kneelers, stone coping and
end stack. Interior: 1 room has a doorway and a niche with open segmental
pediments, and another fluted Ionic pilasters, plaster friezes and cornice.
Doors are panelled oak with original brass hinges and fittings. Floors are
of willow pattern stone. Late C17 staircase with bulb-and-umbrella
balusters. Originally the house was a grange of Fountains Abbey.
