Rockery adjacent
II to Reeth Cottage
Rockery in walled enclosure 1906-14. By Messrs. Backhouse of York for Mr
F S Graham. Rockery of limestone blocks; enclosure wall of rubblestone with
cast-iron railings. Rockery comprises lumps of limestone placed in picturesque
mounds with narrow paths between. Enclosure approx. 14 x 42 metres, has quoins,
flat coping to return walls which ramp up hill-slope and triangular-sectioned
coping to low front wall which is broken by gate with round-topped monolithic
gate piers and is surmounted by hooped and bud-finialled railings, the gate
being similar. On right return, rockery breaks through enclosure wall. Attached
lean-to's not of special interest.
The rockery stones are reported to have been brought to this site from a field
just to the west of the village. The builders, James Backhouse and Son, were
well known rockery builders and alpine nurserymen from the late 1850s. ( The
rockery houses a large and varied collection of alpine plants which is not cover-
ed by the listing.)
