Armistead House
II
Formerly house, now 3 houses. Dated 1707 with C19 and C20 alterations. Limewashed
rubble, stone dressings, stone slate roof. U shaped plan. 3 storeys 5 bays. Right
of centre entrance has moulded surround, decorated lintel dated and inscribed IA
(J Armistead). Entrance to left is late C19 copy of the original; 4 panel door.
The 1707 hoodmould with decorated stops has been extended over the later door.
Right-hand ground floor late C19 window, sashes with glazing bars. Left-hand ground
floor and 4 first floor windows have moulded surrounds and were probably originally
cross windows, mullions and transoms now missing; sashes to ground floor, 16 pane
sashes to 2 left-hand first floor windows and sashes with glazing bars to 2 right-
hand windows. Central first floor window has moulded surround, probably originally
with a transom, now missing; sashes without glazing bars. On second floor 4 former
2-light chamfered mullioned windows, mullions now missing, horizontal sashes with
glazing bars to 2 left-hand and c1970 casements to 2 right-hand windows. Central
single light with chamfered surround. c1970 casement. Gable end kneelers, gable
end and left of centre ridge stacks. Rear: external stone steps to first floor
entrance. Interior: left-hand fireplace with slate voussoirs no segmental arch,
and 2 beehive ovens. Stone flagged dog-leg staircase.
