Cottage and house. Dated 1653. For John Butterfield. Roughcast rubble,
stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Boulder plinth.
Between first and second bays, doorway inserted to give access to cottage.
Between second and third bays, board door in ashlar stop-chamfered quoined
surround with depressed-arch head, and on lintel recessed panels with raised
characters "1653 IB". In first bay: ground-floor 4-light double-chamfered
mullion window with ogee moulding on mullions; first-floor 3-light double-
chamfered mullion window with hollow moulding on mullions. In second and
third bays, side-sliding sash windows with slab lintels and sills. Stacks
at ends and to left of second bay. To right: lean-to addition not of
special interest. Rear: rubble, with large quoins to left; central
semicircular stair turret, with,3 blocked light vents. Interior: stone
newel stair in turret; in central ground-floor room, ashlar fireplace with
double-cyma corbels supporting lintel; in ground-floor room to left,
slightly-arched ashlar fireplace with deep chamfer, and to its left,
cupboard with L hinges; chamfered beams. North Yorkshire and Cleveland
