6/164 Terrace Lodge
GV II
Lodge to Stourhead House (q.v.). 1785 for Richard Colt Hoare.
Dressed limestone, hipped Welsh slate roof, gable end pairs of
diagonally-set rendered stacks. Single-storey, 2-window. Central
projecting stone porch with moulded Tudor-arched opening and
hoodmould, chamfered lights to sides, inner half-glazed Tudor-
arched door, 3-light mullioned casement with cusped arched lights
and hoodmould either side. Pierced triangles decorate parapet,
forming triangle over the porch, with Hoare arms. Right return has
two 3-light mullioned casements with cusped arched lights and
hoodmoulds. Left return has three single cusped headed casements.
Rear courtyard with Tudor-arched archway in wall bounding south
side, single-storey extension. Interior not accessible at time of
survey (October 1986), but said to contain reset late C18 wooden
fireplace surround with scrolled frieze. One of a group of several
picturesque lodges built by Colt Hoare at Stourhead, probably by
William Reveley whose plans for Clock Tower Lodge are dated 1797.
