Description

ARKENGARTHDALE
NY 90 SE
9/5 Old Powder Magazine
7.12.66
GV II *
Powder magazine, now in agricultural use. c1804. Rubble with flush
quoins, stone slate roof. Hexagonal in plan; gabled porch with kneelers
projecting from side formerly facing C B smelting mills. Single-storey.
One side contains inserted sash window with glazing bars, other sides
each contain a blank window with rounded head and projecting keystone.
Shaped kneelers, triangular copings to pyramidal main roof, ball finial
at apex. Interior: plastered and ceiled, a second doorway formerly in
side opposite porch. Built to store the black powder used in the nearby
C B lead-mines, established by Charles Bathurst. This unique survival
of the great lead-mining industry of Arkengarthdale shows considerable
design qualities. Robert T Clough, The Lead Smelting Mills of the
Yorkshire Dales, 1962; Arthur Raistrick, The Lead Industry of
Wensleydale and Swaledale, 1975.
