II

House, circa 1835, extended circa 1855-1860. Cement render, hipped slate
roofs. Two storeys to road, two plus basement to rear with garden at lower
level. 1835 letter-L plan with plain deep eaves and recessed sash windows, 3
bays to north west front. 1850s block rectangular extending south east to form
larger letter-L plan with projecting and pedimented entrance bay to north east
elevation. Plate glass sashes in cement architraved surrounds with sill
brackets. Entrance front of 3 bays has pilastered and pedimented centre bay
with segmental pediment and consoles to upper floor window and projecting arched
and corniced doorcase with channelled jambs, all in cement render. Area in
front of side bays with elaborate cast iron balustrades. South east gable
elevation has central canted bay window to ground floor, sash above. Garden
front 1850s block has bay window at right to basement and ground floor, sash
above, then 3 sashes, centre first floor one blind, 1835 block two bays with
recessed sashes. Band course between storeys to whole of 1850s block and aired
eaves brackets. Built out from 1835 block north east front is entablatured
shallow wing with angle pilasters, band course and parapet. The original north
west front, of 3 bays, disposed to the left, has doorway to left of centre with
Doric porch. Stacks with entablatures interior: Two ground floor rooms of 1835 block with Neo-Classical
painted ceilings of high quality, including busts of Homer and Dante, putti,
vases and foliage. 1850s principal rooms have grand marble fireplaces,
cornices, original gilded plastered pelmets, an elaborate pedimented and
swagged over door, chair rails and wall panels. Hallway similar.
Note: Belmont was built for John Staples. A drawing (copy in possession of the
owner) of the house is signed W Wyndham Esq and dated 1835.
