Small detached house. Circa late C17 with late C20 extension. Stone rubble with
large quoins. Thatched roof, half-hipped to right (east) and gabled left end with
internal stack with brick shaft. Plan: 2-room plan facing south, with small
unheated right hand (east) room and large room to left-with gable end fireplace,
winder staircase beside stack and direct entry from doorway at front. In late C20
a large extension was built at right hand (east) end. Exterior: 1 storey and
attic. Symmetrical 2-window south front; the first floor windows under eyebrow
eaves. C20 2-light casements with leaded panes and central doorway with circa
late C29 plank door and C20 gabled thatched porch. At rear (north) one small
ground floor window on left and another on each floor to right, the fist floor
under eyebrow eaves; all C20 metal frame casements with leaded panes. At east end
large C20 2 storey wing attached by single storey link. At west end small circa
late C19 brick outshut: Interior: The large left hand room has chamfered cross-
beam with hollow step stops. Over the matchboard partition between the two rooms
a chamfered cross-beam with runout stops. C19 plank doors. Large left end fire-
place blocked by smaller C20 fireplace. To left of stack a winder staircase. The
2-bay roof has timbers of unusually heavy scantling. The central truss has large
principals and collar which might be reused timber since they have redundant halv-
ings for lap joints. The large purlins are exposed but the apex of the roof is
sealed and inaccessible.

Small detached cottage. C18. Ribbon-pointed rubble, thatch roof. Main front,
away from road is symmetrical 1 ½ storeys, 2 windows, 2-light leaded casements,
set to eyebrow dormers at upper level. Central thatched C20 porch with glazed
doors over plank door. Right gable has single light to first floor. To road
has a 1-light and 2-light at ground floor and 2-light to eyebrow at upper
level. Brick stack at west end, and small one storey brick extension. Interior
not inspected. Modest but relatively unaltered externally, the cottage lies
c. 10 m south east of St Matthew's Church (q.v.). Wing with garage attached to
the east side (1987) not of special interest.
