Includes: No.83 CITADEL ROAD Hoe.
Pair of houses in planned street. 1829, attributed to John
Foulston, remodelled late C19. Stucco, with stucco detail, on
probable rubble; dry slate mansard roof behind parapet with
entablature with moulded cornice and panelled centre break; 4
mansard dormers with sashes; brick end stacks, the right-hand
stack truncated. Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic over basement; 4-bay front with
canted bays at left and right and entrance bay of No.30 left
of centre, No.31 (right) with entrance to Citadel Road. Late
C19 horned sashes, most with vertical glazing bars to No.30.
Stucco detail includes: original recessed panel to
ground-floor centre, channelled rustication to ground floor of
bay windows, sill string and moulded architraves to 1st floor.
Good entrance porch to No.30, with eared architrave, moulded
entablature and balustraded parapet; 6-panel door within
porch.
INTERIOR: not inspected but may be of interest.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls and entrance bridge with
wrought-iron railings with arrow-head finials and stanchions
with flaming-urn finials; original iron gate with anthemion
decoration to No.30.
Part of an important planned group on the Hoe.
No.31 was listed on 01/05/75.
