4 pairs of houses in planned street. c1829, by John Foulston.
Stucco, with stucco detail, on probable rubble; dry slate to
No.23 (2nd from left), otherwise asbestos slate, the roofs
behind parapet with entablature with moulded cornice;
segmental-roofed attic dormers to Nos 24 and 27, otherwise
modified or later dormers; brick end stacks.
PLAN: double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic over basement; each pair of
houses is a symmetrical 4-window front with centre broken
forward. Original surviving stucco detail includes: channelled
rustication to ground floor of Nos 24, 25 and 30, the others
with impost string only, recessed panels to ground floor, sill
strings, and moulded architraves to 1st floor of Nos 25-30.
Original hornless sash, with some glazing bars missing, to
No.24, otherwise C20 windows.
INTERIOR: not inspected but may retain original features of
interest.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls and bridges to entrances
with wrought-iron railings with arrow-head finials and
stanchions with flaming-urn finials; original iron gates with
anthemion decoration to Nos 24-29.
Although damaged during the Blitz, this street is still a good
example of early C19 terraced house design and part of an
important planned group on the Hoe.
