3/14 Steps, Walls, ornamental Vases and
Sundial forming junction between
rose garden and north lawn at Barrow
Court
G.V. II*
Steps, Walls, ornamental Vases and Sundial. Circa 1890 by F. Inigo Thomas.
Coursed rubble to wall base and lower archway, ashlar dressings and copings,
ironwork railings. A series of stone steps up either side of a rusticated
archway over a semi-circular pond. At the top of the steps a viewing platform of
stone flags placed centrally on the north boundary axis path of the Rose Garden.
The archway has a lion's head spout whose water course links with the Lily Pond
(q.v.). The platform is enclosed on the north side by iron railings with urn
finials and wrought iron panels of Tijou derivation; 2 ornamental Vases are set
at each corner as the steps ascend: slim tapered necks and gadrooned bowls. The
Sundial is placed centrally on the platform: baluster shaped shaft with acanthus
carving and a copper plaque with missing shadow bar. These features together
with others comprise a fine formal garden layout designed by Thomas for Henry
Martin Gibbs; it is included in the Historic Gardens Register : Part 1 Avon.
